Sharks ended a glorious championship winning season with a whimper as they crashed 2-0 to the youthful ANZA boys. Sharks welcomed back Michael Jensen, fondly known as “Calamari”, for his last Central Park game as he heads home to Denmark after a two year stay in Singapore. However Sharks notable absentees for their final match was Yi Quan, Isaac and Murugesan as caretaker manager and club captain Vincent Yeo took the reins of the team in the final league game.
The game started at a high tempo with ANZA having the better of exchanges with crisp passing as the boys in yellow chased shadows. Despite having several chances to open the scoring, ANZA spurned their efforts wide. From defense to attack, Sharks were all over the place with poor touches and lack of focus which saw possession at a premium.
The boys finally mustered a shot on goal when Sho let fly but his effort was comfortably handled by the custodian. With ten minutes to the break, Sharks almost stole the lead when some good interplay between Sho and Harold saw the latter unleash an unstoppable effort which smashed against the crossbar and to safety. The game ended goalless as boys took a much needed breather.
Second half started as Sharks tried to wrestle control of possession back from the ANZA boys. Unfortunately, the constant pressure from the boys in green was too much to bear and they made the breakthrough ten minutes into the second half. Several counter attacks from Jason, Naoki and Harold were thwarted and ANZA made it count when they slotted a second goal mid way through the half. Harold had a superb opportunity to pull a goal back after neat cross field ball from Naoki but he shot straight to the grateful keeper.
The game ended 2-0 to ANZA which was a fair reflection as boys in yellow must move on from this season and look forward to the challenge in the coming one. The management would like to congratulate all the players for a remarkable season and would like to wish Calamari all the best for all future endeavors.
