Match Report

Central Park is still searching for that elusive first win of the season, despite coming close on a few occasions. The match against Admiralz was no exception, despite a dominant display in the first half. Without Mizan, Aaron and Chris in the side, Anuar had to step up between the sticks as a makeshift custodian. His performance in an unfamiliar position eventually made the difference for the Sharks. Another player found himself thrust in a position he would not have expected to be in, as Graeme made his debut as right back instead of his usual central midfield role.
The cool morning weather allowed for a vigorous start to the game, with both sides playing some attacking football. Admiralz made the better start, concentrating their play down the middle. However the back four of Yi Quan, Charlson, Vincent and Graeme held firm. Harold was up against a speedy marker, but he matched him for pace to whip in a low cross. The few attempts to do this however could not reach Isaac. Then the Sharks drew first blood, when Isaac got possession of the ball in the final third. He turned a defender and slipped the ball through to Jon who, with a touch of fortune, beat his marker and ran through on goal. He provided an unerring finish past the keeper to put the Sharks in the lead.
The short goal-kicks to Graeme worked impressively, with the natural distributer able to pick out passes to midfield ensuring a smooth transition from defense to attack. One such exchange found the ball at Charlson’s feet, and he delivered a diagonal pass for Jason to run on to. Jon met Jason’s cross in the box, but despite a slick turn, his shot sailed just wide of the far post. Admiralz attempted to break down the right time and again, making Yi Quan work hard for his money but could fashion no meaningful chances on goal. The ball did find the back of the net from an Admiralz header, but the referee disallowed it due to a foul.
The half ended with Central Park in the ascendency, and the looked to go for the kill with a more attacking line up in the second half. This proved a mistake, and Admiralz instead looked the more threatening after the break. The Sharks were pegged back in their own half from the start, as the in-form Reds rained in cross after cross. The resolute Central Park defense deflected all threats, and played on the break. Heng Li found the ball at his feet a lot, but his attempts at early crosses were cut out by the backtracking defenders. Isaac and Jon struggled to get into the game as the Reds’ midfield and defense packed the middle tight.
The Admiralz pressure finally paid off, but only through a crucial mistake by Shahril. The defender was caught napping, as he failed to clear a bouncing ball. The diminutive Admiralz striker burst through and stroked the ball past the Anuar for the equalizer. The Reds then resumed their attacks, as the Sharks’ slick passing in the first half left them. Isaac, Heng Li and Harold did have opportunities to take the lead, but their final ball and finishing was left wanting.
The Admiralz once again found the back of the net following one of their many corners, but this time the striker was flagged offside. The game ended all square, with both sides undeserving of victory. Central Park look mired in a relegation dogfight at the moment, and desperately need a victory to kick start their season.
The manager commented after the game, 'The point does not do us any good at this juncture. We could have gone up by 2-3 goals if we have been sharper in front of goal. Nonetheless, Admiralz as usual kept coming and grinning and got their just reward'.
He added, 'Five points from 6 games is relegation material and this has to be probably one of the worst start we have had as long as I could remember.

Match Report

In a game where Central Park is still looking for its elusive first win in Season 17, the end result probably didn't do both teams any favor as Team H fought back to draw 3-3 albeit with 10 men. Sharks took the lead from an unlikely source; Jeffrey Soon coming from behind to sneak a goal from six yards after good work from Harold. Team H fought back with a cracker at the other end; leaving stand-in custodian Chris Lam no chance. The opposition doubled their lead just before half-time with Sharks once again staring at defeat. Harold though pulled his team level with an astute volley just outside the box before debutant Jon gave the boys in yellow a much deserved lead with them having better possesion in the opening exchanges of the second half. Nonetheless, Team H ensured that despite having a man down, they finished the game with a much deserved point.
Sharks started the game slowly as they went head-to-head with their rivals for the past couple of season. Having drawn their first match-up this season at 3-3, this was a match that promises a lot of goals. Just when Team H was getting a grip of the game, Heng Li manages to free Harold off his marker's shackle and the winger whipped a low cross that misses everyone until Jeffrey came up at the far post to give his team an early lead.
A solitary goal was never enough and while Sharks could have extended their lead shortly afterwards when Isaac broke free into the opposition's half, his cross-shot was never going to trouble the custodian. At the other end, Team H level the game when Sharks failed to clear their lines and a screamer just in front of Chris left the custodian stranded. Shortly afterwards, they grabbed a contentious goal off a free-kick and Sharks defense were caught sleeping at the back. 2-1 as Team H took the lead at half-time.
Sharks came off the blocks quicker in the second half and were winning more of those 50-50 balls. Just 11 minutes into the second half, Harold matched Team H first goal with a fine volley just outside the area; leaving the unsighted custodian with no chance. Things were on the upside as Sharks took the lead 8 minutes later; debutant Jon broke free of the last man and he made no mistake with a one-on-one opportunity.
Midway into the second half, Team H levelled the game again as once again, Sharks failed to clear their lines off a corner. Team H goal leveller turn from hero to zero when he find himself staring at a red card shortly afterwards for a harrowing lunge on Brendan. Sharks tried to push forward for the elusive winner and they thought they got it when Isaac finished from close range but the burly forward was adjudged to be offside as both team shared the spoils for an entertaining game.
The Sharks manager commented, 'It was always a tough game against Team H but on the other hand, we should have defended better. It's worrying to see that we conceded all 3 goals off a set-piece and that's something we should be working on.'

Match Report

Central Park narrowly missed the cut for the last 16 in the 1st ESPZEN Community Cup with a 1-0 loss to James Cook University over at Bedok North. The defeat put the team now without a goal after 180 minutes of play and it will put serious question mark on whether the new formation adopted by the manager for this season will bear any fruit.
A miscommunication between players and manager for the game meant that several players went missing as it was meant to be a free weekend for the team. Nonetheless, the team managed to put together a team and with the inclusion of old horse Kelvin Tan, Sharks look set to be provide the youthful opposition a run for their money. Both teams had trouble finding their feet in the game though Sharks were constantly providing a threat on the right with some marauding runs by Jeffrey though his final ball left much to be desired. On the other end, JCU managed to pull a save off Aaron off a free-kick when the Sharks custodian had to palm the ball away for a corner. The closest Shark went into taking the lead was when a ball broke free just outside the penalty box but Jeffrey miscued his shot without troubling the custodian as both teams went into the break levelled.
The second half didn't see much changes in the pattern of play with Sharks making a couple of changes. JCU on the other hand were looking more dangerous as they inched closer to control the middle of the park. The goal came just inside 10 minutes of the second half when Zhuoneng allowed his opposite number a free rein on the wings and with no one taking responsibility in the middle, JCU sneaked in the goal in between Sharks central defenders. Sharks begin to finally find their feet on the game and manages to create a couple of half chances. With the Sharks needing a goal desperately, a shift in formation changed the shape of the team and coupled with a needless sending off of JCU midfielder, Sharks begin to crave out chances.
Chris and Heng Li managed to test the custodian on a couple of occasions but the biggest chance came off Charlson who found himself in acres of space just inside the box but his shot left much to be desired. Chris had another chance after a good pass off Jiayong but while the shot was on target, it did not trouble the opposition custodian.
Despite their valiant effort to get something off the game, Sharks were unable to find the elusive goal as they now can just look forward to the Plate draw in the next fixture.
The manager commented, 'Anything is possible in a Cup tie and while victory still eludes the team, we hope the team could bounce back in next weekend league tie to get our season back on track.

Match Report

Another loss sees Central Park propping up most of division 3, with only Singapore Pirates having a worse record. In a game the Sharks could have won, they instead threw away their numerical advantage to go down 2-0.
Jiayong made an emotional return after over 2 seasons out. However two unfortunate mistakes by the right back led to the defeat. His performances though were encouraging as he offered an extra element in attack with his deep crosses.
Another game went ahead in the scorching sun, with the Sharks trying to get their season back on track having already recorded two disappointing defeats in three games. The opening exchanges were a cagey affair, with the packed Central Park midfield effectively stifling any Primero attempts on goal. The first threat came from a Primero freekick, which rattled the crossbar and flew into touch.
Their number 10 was a constant thorn in the Sharks’ side, frequently taking on players and making penetrating runs. However despite good approach play, they lacked a final ball. Central Park too were not making much headway in attack, until Harold suddenly burst into life on the right. Outpacing his marker, the winger slammed a low shot straight into the upright. The rebound fell at Issac’s feet, but with the goal gaping, the target man somehow managed to sidefoot wide.
The second half offered a more open game, with Jiayong coming on for Zhuoneng at right back. Primero struck first, finding the back of the net. But the referee signaled for offside. Without provocation, the Primero striker suddenly lost control and punched Mizan in the face. To the big goalkeeper’s credit, he remained cool and did not react.
The referee immediately whipped the red card out, and Primero was reduced to ten men. This was the cue for Central Park to step up their attack, but that response didn’t come. Instead Primero seemed more determined to score, and they did just that when a late lunge by Jiayong felled a Primero player in the box. They duly converted with a well placed shot to the top corner.
Central Park had a few opportunities themselves, but the quality of their final ball was lacking. With the Sharks more committed to attacking, holes in the back began to surface. A Primero forward flicked a ball into the box, and with the Sharks’ defenders hesitant to clear, found their winger lurking. A toe poke past Mizan was enough to secure a two-goal cushion for the boys in green.
Central Park then threw on all their strikers in a bid to score. Jason had an opportunity when Harold beat his marker and cut back, but their Primero defenders flung themselves in the way of the shot. Jason then fluffed another chance, when he brought down the ball at the edge of the box but volleyed wide. Some good work on the right saw Heng Li put through but the diminutive striker’s crosses left much to be desired.
The final whistle put Central Park out of their misery, as they more than failed to capitalize on their extra man. It was another disappointing result that did little to raise the team’s morale.
The furious manager commented after the game, 'We just switched off after the opposition was reduced to 10 men but on the other hand, it was the same old story of us not taking our chances and being punished.'
When queried on the red card incident, 'That just don't belong anywhere in the game and the referee had to take responsibility for not having a control of the game and letting some over-zealous tackles got away. Violence have no place in the game and hopefully the player gets a pretty long ban from the league.'

Match Report

Despite some excellent attacking displays, Central Park narrowly went down to the newly relegated Admiralz. Some shocking finishing, doomed the Sharks to their second defeat of the season, as they were without the services of Issac, Harold and Chris.
With the scorching sun beating down on the pitch, Central Park got off to a sluggish start, failing to take any control on the game. Admiralz showed some slick moves, with their quick wingers seeing much of the ball. Their game plan was obvious – attack down the flanks. With the Sharks unable to string passes together, Admiralz grew in confidence and started to see more space in their opponent’s half. Their right winger especially was giving Yi Quan a torrid time as the fullback missed his headers and clearances. Eventually once such mistake was punished, as the speedy Admiralz winger cut past both Yi Quan and Vince before placing an inch perfect shot beyond Mizan at the far post. It was just what Admiralz deserved.
Central Park showed great spirit however to get themselves back in the game. Ryan and Graeme were making themselves available for the pass, and managed to create some problems at the back. The breakthrough came when a half cleared corner found Yi Quan outside the penalty area. The fullback scuffed his attempted shot, but it found Heng Li unmarked in the area with loads of space. The diminutive striker sidefooted it first time into the roof of the net for the equalizer. Admiralz then produced the best in Mizan, when he dived down to palm away a header destined for the bottom corner. The Sharks could also have gone ahead when Heng Li beat his marker down the left flank to cross for the onrushing Vincent, but the reliable captain’s diving header just cleared the cross bar.
Central Park stuck to their game plan for the second half, as Jason and Zhuoneng replaced their counterparts on the right. The first action came when Graeme launched a superb diagonal ball to Jason on the right flank. The winger however hesitated in pulling the trigger and when he did, scuffed his shot wide of the mark. Jason’s second opportunity came shortly after when he met Ryan’s in-swinging corner, but once again the attempt on goal was off-target.
Admiralz continued to look dangerous as their forwards took on the Central Park defence, but with the defence working overtime, their attacks were stemmed comfortably. One mistake however, changed the game. The Admiralz stikers exchanged an excellent one-two to beat Anuar and Vince, before slotting the ball past Mizan to take the lead against the run of play. This spurred Central Park into more urgent action as they proceeded to pummel the Admiralz defence.
With only one substitute in the scorching heat, the reds visibly tired as the Sharks poured forward in search of the leveler. Jason had another great chance to score, when Heng Li turned his marker in the box to square it to the right winger. An Admiralz defender took a touch, but Jason managed to control, turn and shoot. Unfortunately with the goalkeeper beaten, a defender standing on the line was able to clear and the opportunity was lost.
Another fantastic chance fell to Yus, who was put through by yet another pin point pass. The midfielder bore down on goal, but lacked the composure and hit his shot straight into the grateful goalkeeper. Central Park’s attacking play deserved some reward, but with gilt-edged chances missed, the game eventually slipped away.
The visibly upset manager commented, 'We were simply atrocious in our finishing and do not deserve to get anything from the game. We could have wrapped up the game by half-time with a couple of chances that went begging'.
He added, 'There was only so much the defense could do and if we don't score, there is always a danger to lose by the odd goal. Nonetheless, it was a valiant effort by Admiralz and they deserved the victory.

Match Report

Sharks were given a league repreive as they faced FC MYK in the quarter-final showdown in the League Cup this weekend. Having gone head-to-head with a win and a loss in last season's league proper, the game was all for the taking for both teams. The boys in yellow however were looking to bounce back from a poor 4-0 defeat last weekend.
The returning manager made several changes with Mizan installed as the team's custodian and in defense, Vince and Yi Quan were called into the starting eleven. Graeme made his first start since coming back from his layoff while Aaron found himself on the right.
The opening exchanges tipped towards Sharks favor and Aaron found himself in a couple of good position on the wings but his final pass left much to be desired. However he made good of the next opportunity when an early cross found the opposition scrambling to clear the dangerous cross with Isaac lurking. Despite failing to find the burly forward, Harold came out of nowhere to find the back of the next with a thumping shot inside the box. 1-0 and Sharks begin to control much of the game with FC MYK unable to play their normal fluid passing game.
Sharks soak and strike strategy begin to work and despite FC MYK managing to find some space on the flanks, it was the boys in yellow yet again coming close. This time round, Harold found himself clear on goal but his finishing were poor as he failed to get a clean shot towards goal. At the other end, the opposition began to find space in the middle of the park and they came close thru a free-kick which Mizan was glad to see it miss just by inches off his left hand corner. Sharks took to half-time with a slender lead.
The second half saw Chris, Dominic, Zhuoneng and Karzzan coming in and despite the changes in personnel, the team stayed to the manager's gameplan to pack the midfield and not allowing the opposition time to pick out their passes. Just as the opposition were getting into their rythmn, Isaac sank their hearts when he gave his team their second goal out of nowhere. Collecting a pass off Chris, he looked and found the custodian off his line and let fly a shot almost from the middle of the park as it sailed into the top corner. Two nil up and Sharks begin to defend even more stoutly with Anuar and VInce forming a formidable backline ably assisted by Zhuoneng and the ever impressive Yi Quan.
Midway to the second half, FC MYK almost pulled a goal back when a slide-rule pass found the forward clean inside the penalty box. With Mizan beaten, the resulting lob missed the target by a mile. Shortly afterwards, they came close again; this time it rocked the crossbar off a free-kick. At the other end, the off-color Harold made another incisive contribution before being substituted. A freekick somehow found Chris facing the back of goal but out of nothing, the pressured forward found the back of the net to make it 3-0.
That didn't damper the opposition spirit as they kept trying to find the back of the net but Mizan in the form he was in, there was no way past him as Sharks ran out comfortable winners to go to the next round.
The manager commented, 'It was a disciplined performance and everyone stucked to their task. The most important was we took the opportunity that came our way and hopefully we can bring this to our league performance next weekend.'

Match Report

It was a battle of the parks, and one that Central Park lost as they fell to one of their most humiliating defeats to division 3 newboys Holland Park XI, who after this performance could very well be strong title contenders. The Sharks though didn’t performance to the levels they are capable of and will want to put the memories of this match to bed. Central Park was without Yi Quan and both Vincents, leaving a threadbare defence.
The game began in cool weather with grey clouds filling the sky. Central Park’s start mirrored the gloomy weather, as some lacklustre passing gave the ball away in the middle of the park too often. Within minutes, Holland Park took full advantage of this to play a through-ball into the right channel. Their speedy winger burst past the flat back four and hammered a shot that went under Aaron for the opener.
The defence clearly had issues with communication and Holland Park’s second came not too long after. A bad clearance gave the ball away in the middle, and a long ball found their striker in space, with Jun Siong playing him onside. Aaron came off his line, but was beaten by a cheeky punt that went under him. At this point, the Sharks looked defeated and couldn’t fashion any meaningful chances on goal. Their worst fears came true, when Holland Park pulled even further ahead. Some impressive slick passing cut through the Sharks like a hot knife through butter, and they broke down their right flank again. The winger unselfishly centred the ball to find an onrushing striker who made no mistake with the goal gaping.
Jun Siong had an effort fly just wide, and several corners missed their mark, summing up Central Park’s day. The second half saw more action for the boys in yellow. Chen Wei was introduced to good effect, as he bravely took on Holland Park’s defence. He fashioned a chance for himself on the right but shot just wide. Harold, playing in an unfamiliar position of left back, let fly a freekick just outside the box, but that too couldn’t find the target. The Sharks’ best chance came when Jess took possession on the right and squared the ball into the box, but Issac somehow fluffed his lines, and the defence cleared comfortably.
Harold and Chen Wei on the left were supposed to provide an added attacking impetus, but Holland Park’s quality pegged them back constantly. Finally the pressure on the flanks paid off, as Holland Park’s excellent right winger sent in a swirling cross. Despite having no strikers around, Zhuoneng failed to clear and instead diverted the ball past the flailing Aaron.
The diminutive goalkeeper thought made some good saves. As Holland Park cut through the Sharks once again, their forward found himself with only the keeper to beat. But as his shot looked destined for the bottom corner, Aaron stuck out a palm to beat it away.
The game wound down amid the pouring rain, with the weather mirroring Central Park’s mood as they sunk to their worst loss in 2 seasons.
The stand-in manager Heng Li commented, 'It's a tough defeat and it was just a poor game collectively on our part.'
The manager who was out of town was clearly incensed with the result and look forward to coming back into the team at this weekend cup game.
